OCTF Information Event

Date: 11/12/2006

Paul Goggins MP, Security Minister and Chair of the Organised Crime Task Force today, in the lead up to Christmas, warned everyone of the real cost of buying fake goods and asked them to think twice before lining the pockets of organised criminals.

"Everyone needs to be aware of the real cost of buying fake and frequently shoddy, dangerous and harmful products. Organised criminals show a blatant disregard for consumer rights and public safety, their only concern is to make money. These gangs operate all year round but rely on Christmas for bumper sales.

"Some people think that there is no harm in buying even one fake DVD or must have item, especially at this time of year. However, when that view prevails what we are really doing is lining the pockets of gangsters and enabling them to support lavish criminal lifestyles. In many instances it helps to fund even more evil and sinister activities such as drug dealing, armed robbery, extortion and terrorism."

Paul Goggins was speaking at the OCTF Information event in Coleraine attended by some 150 young people from seven schools in the North Eastern Education and Library Board Area. Facilitated by experts from OCTF partner agencies, the young people aged between 14 and 16 had the opportunity to learn about the harm caused by organised crime and to raise issues directly to the Minister, law enforcement and industry representatives.

Highlighting how everyone can help to frustrate and thwart organised criminal enterprises, Paul Goggins said: "By not buying fake or smuggled goods we can help close down the market for them and cut a vital source of money for these unscrupulous evil criminals. Don’t let them wreck anymore lives. Help put these bandits out of business. Don’t buy counterfeit goods and if you know it’s going on, report it."
