Cross Border Organised Crime Assessment 2006 launch

Date: 09/10/2006

Paul Goggins MP, Security Minister and Chair of the Organised Crime Task Force today warned organised criminals that the border offers them no protection.

The warning came at the launch of the Cross Border Organised Crime Assessment 2006 which was also attended by Garda Commissioner, Noel Conroy, PSNI Chief Constable, Sir Hugh Orde and senior law enforcement representatives from both jurisdictions.

Paul Goggins said: "Those engaged in organised crime, who ignore or attempt to use the border to their advantage, are finding that law enforcement in both jurisdictions are working together to thwart and disrupt their illegal activity and put them out of business."

Effective cross border law enforcement activity has significantly curtailed illegal dumping in Northern Ireland and officers in both jurisdictions continue to mount successful joint operations against those engaged in criminality, including drug dealing, laundered fuel, and smuggled and counterfeit goods.

Congratulating law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border for their efforts to drive down cross border organised crime, the Minister said: "Our law enforcement agencies are to be congratulated for the successes they have had. They have been effective in targeting criminal gangs who peddle lethal drugs to our children, who threaten the livelihoods of honest traders by selling fake goods and put lives at risk by selling goods that are not safe. Their lavish lifestyles offend all law abiding citizens who work hard to earn an honest living.

"The joint assessment indicates clearly that by working in partnership we are bringing to justice those who engage in cross border organised crime. They should be in no doubt that law enforcement and the governments in both jurisdictions will continue to pool resources and expertise to tackle this problem."

The joint cross border organised crime assessment was launched at the start of the fourth annual Cross Border Co-operation seminar on organised crime. This year the two-day seminar is in Limavady and attended by senior representatives of law enforcement and government from both jurisdictions
