Counterfeit currency

Northern Ireland is unique in the United Kingdom because it has a large number of different types of banknotes in circulation; these include notes from the four main local banks as well as from Scottish banks, the Bank of England and Euros.
Counterfeit currency is sometimes produced locally, but it can also be brought in from other parts of the UK and quality can vary greatly. PSNI have noted links between the production and/or supply of counterfeit currency and other types of organised crime such as fuel laundering and drugs supply. Counterfeit currency is sold through criminal networks or at markets and car boot sales.
